Every country has its great public holidays but the Melbourne Cup might be one of the oddest public holidays I’ve ever heard of. Last Tuesday the whole state of Victoria shut down to celebrate the largest horse race with 6.2 million up for grabs but the hipsters take a whole different approach to this holiday.
Up in Northcote on a back street the curbs are lined with the worst/best dressed hipsters loaded with stacks of beers to watch the billy cart races. At the top of the hill is a sweet launch pad where two races are released down the track on these tiny homemade carts. The race was broken down into to rounds or heats or something, I wasn’t really following all the action just stopped by to people watch and check out a few races. The sides of the road got progressively more packed as the afternoon went on making the odd crashes more interesting as people scattered out of the way to save their ankles.
